Together with the changing society and new tasks of education, the activities of the academic library are being transformed. At the stage of development of the information society, the academic library becomes the center of the educational process, as well as a platform for pedagogical innovations. A powerful, technologically equipped library and information center begins to play a central role in teaching students a set of knowledge and skills in working with information.
The library of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University was opened simultaneously with the university in 1934. Library named after al-Farabi, which is an information, educational and cultural center of the University, receiving quality education and training highly qualified specialists. On September 8, 2004, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N.A. Nazarba together with the President of the Czech Republic Vaclav Klaus laid the first stone in the foundation of the new building of the University Library (Fig. 1).
2012 in the history of the Library was marked by a special event - the move to a new modern building. On April 13, 2013, before the start of the Nauryz holiday, a presentation of the new building of the Library took place at the university (Fig. 2).

On the basis of the Rector's Order No. 281 of 06/26/2014, the name of the scientific library was changed to "Library named after al-Farabi".
The training and information zone includes universal classrooms, coworking rooms, thematic rooms, subscriptions, electronic and reading rooms, as well as book storage. The library provides a book fund corresponding to the educational programs of the University and access to indexed international databases such as Scopus, Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, Oxford, etc., in addition, it provides access to modern electronic library information resources to support distance education (IPRbooks , Urait, EBS Lan, Mbook, Plenipotentiary, etc.).
Book storage
The basement floor of the library is completely set aside for the storage area of information carriers - a book depository with open access for mass visits and the issuance of fiction. Book storage is a structural subdivision of the library, carrying out storage of fixed assets, their arrangement and accounting.
Main directions of work:
• formation and preservation of the main fund of the library; organizing the placement of a single library fund;
• satisfaction of information requests of readers and subscribers of the library with documents from the main fund for work in service departments;
interlibrary loan with libraries of other universities
keeping records of documents for newly received or excluded publications;
providing a fund for holding exhibitions and other events of the library;
organization of work on checking the funds of the structural divisions of the library;
selection and exclusion from the library fund of outdated, outdated, doublet and little-used literature.
The fund of the Library named after al-Farabi stores literature in different directions: scientific and fiction literature, books on natural sciences, humanities, literature in foreign languages, periodicals.
rtistic literature combines the works of world classics in various genres: novels, poems, science fiction, etc. The fund also contains rare copies of books today, on the basis of which famous films have been shot: "Amangeldi", "Kyz Zhibek", "Menin atym Kozha", "Kokserek", "Twelve Chairs", "War and Peace", "Gone by the wind ", etc.
in the Kazakh language, published in Arabic, Latin graphics, as well as in Cyrillic script: "Ak Zhol" ("1920-1925)," Alash "(1917)," Enbekci qazaq "(1924-1930), "Vakt" (1908-1916), "Kazakh" (1914-1917), "Terjiman" (1907,1908,1911), "Turkestan" (1907), "Ulug Turkestan" (1917 -1918).
In the book storage, work is being carried out to restore especially valuable books, to restore the binding of books from the library fund, to bind newspaper binders left for permanent storage.
