Today is the birthday of Kazakh poet Mukagali Makatayev

Mukagali Suleimenovich Makataev February 9, 1931, Karasaz village, Narynkol district, Alma-Ata region – March 27, 1976, Alma-Ata, Kazakh SSR, USSR) – Kazakh Soviet poet and writer, translator.

The first poems of the seventeen-year-old Mukagali were published in 1948 in the newspaper “Soviet Border”, because he was from the Narynkol border area. Poems are always full of references to these places, and, mortally ill, he asks to be taken to his native village in the hope that only his native land can save him. Readers recognized and felt their poet from publications in newspapers and magazines, from the collective collection “Zhastar Zhyry” (“Songs of Youth”), released in 1951. In 1962, the newspaper “Socialistik Kazakhstan” published the poem “Appassionata”, which brought fame to Makataev, and his name joined the ranks of the best Kazakh poets.

Author of the books “Life is a legend”, “Life is a river”, “Mozart’s Requiem”, “Favorites”. The song “Sarzhailau” based on his poems became popular. He translated into Kazakh Russian classics, foreign literature, including Walt Whitman, Dante’s Divine Comedy. His name is placed next to the names of Abai, Auezov and other classics of Kazakh literature.About the translation of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, Makatayev’s colleague Orynbay Zhanaydarov wrote: “Mukagali, translating Dante, added two syllables to the line of the Divine Comedy and rhymed the famous tercina without dividing into cross rhymes.In Mukagali’s three-line terts that make up the poem, all three lines rhyme! The result is a chased Kazakh verse! A verse amazing in its structure and style” (Prostor magazine, 2012, No. 2).
