The Russian State Library invites restorers, curators and employees involved in the preservation of the document collection to take part in the V International Scientific and Practical Seminar “Document Restoration: Conservatism and Innovation-2021”.

Admission to the seminar is free for restorers, conservators and employees involved in the preservation of the document collection.

Commercial organizations, their representatives, as well as individuals can participate in the seminar only on a paid basis.

Pre-registration is required.

Within the framework of the event, participants will have a unique opportunity to attend lectures, master classes, exhibitions and discussions on topical issues of preservation and new technologies in the restoration of documents and talk about exciting topics of preservation of the document fund with domestic and foreign colleagues.

The theoretical part is represented by the following topics:

  1. Book Binding restoration: research, traditional and new methods, reconstruction, recreation.
  2. Restoration, the study of the parchment.
  3. Restoration of a research paper. Practice.
  4. Research in the field of document preservation: new technologies, non-standard solutions, monitoring.
  5. The effect of storage conditions on the physical condition of documents. Phase storage, encapsulation, and stabilization methods.
  6. Bio-damage of documents: prevention, elimination of consequences.
  7. Training in document preservation: problems and solutions. Courses of additional professional education.
  8. Features of photo restoration. Practical experience.

Practical part:

  1. 3-day master class of restorers from Matenadaran “Formation of traditional Armenian binding”. Presenters: Senior restorers of the Mesrop Mashtots Research Institute of Ancient Manuscripts (Matenadaran) Susanna Barseghyan Artur Petrosyan, Taguhi Of Jenderedjian (Armenia).
  2. Master class on weaving Coptic, Byzantine, and Islamic kaptal. Sherif Afifi, Head of the Department of Rare Book Conservation at the Alexandrina Library, Alexandria (Egypt).
  3. Master class “Fundamentals of chemistry for restorers”. Alexey A. Kashcheev, Head of the Preventive Conservation Sector of the Department of Restoration of Library Collections of the Russian State Library of Russia.
  4. Master class “Features of restoration of gelatin photographs of the XIX century” Kalistratova Elena Aleksandrovna, artist-restorer of the 1st category.
  5. Master class “Restoring the integrity of the document base by manual filling with paper pulp”. Sharapova Irina Sergeevna, Head of the Department of Restoration of the LMRD RGANTD.
  6. “Gels, microemulsions and nanomaterials for preserving documents on paper”. Practical lesson by Antonio Mirabile, researcher and paper restorer, participant of the APACHE project (France).
  7. Practical lesson on the restoration of a fabric binding. The author’s technique of Cecile Brossard, senior artist-restorer of the National Library of France.
  8. Master class on the production of marble paper. Hyyrynen Ekaterina (Savelyeva), certified master for the production of marble paper.
  9. Master class “A set of measures for the prevention and elimination of the consequences of biological damage”. Shadrin O. V., chief specialist preventive conservation restoration Department of library funds of the RSL.
